Five senior basketball players will play last regular-season home game.
Five senior basketball players, along with squash, swimming and track seniors, will be honored at Friday's regular-season home basketball finale against Collegiate.
Corey Dalton, Drew DiStanislao, Patrick Martin, Rob Vozenilek and Kevin Whitehead have helped St. Christopher's varsity team go from five wins two years ago, nine last season to 15 and counting in the 2010-11 campaign.
They each take pride in the ascension of the Saints hoops program. Read how they feel about each of their senior teammates and what they think of the program as it stands now.
COREY DALTON Varsity sports: Two years of soccer and basketball On DiStanislao: Tough. On Vozenilek: Motivator. On Whitehead: Genuine. On Martin: Stubborn. On program: I think this group of guys love the game of basketball and love playing with each other. I've just seen improvement throughout the entire program.
DREW DISTANISLAO Varsity sports: Three years of baseball, two basketball On Dalton: Upbeat. On Vozenilek: Leader. On Whitehead: Quiet. On Martin: Monotone. On program: When I was a sophomore watching the varsity not be very good I didn't know if I wanted to be a part of it. Now the program has improved. I think coach [Hamill] Jones is a big part of that.
PATRICK MARTIN Varsity sports: Three years of baseball, basketball, two years of football On DiStanislao: Goofy. On Vozenilek: Confident. On Whitehead: Quiet. On Dalton: Weird. There's no other word for it. On program: I think that we've improved every year. The reason we've won so many games is that we're never out of a game. I feel like we can always create energy when it's not there. I don't think the bench guys get the credit they deserve. We can do something that hasn't happened in a while.
ROB VOZENILEK Varsity sports: Three years of basketball, football and lacrosse (Captain in each) On DiStanislao: Indifferent. On Dalton: Underclassman. On Whitehead: Quiet. On Martin: Hats. On program: Coach Jones and the captains just try to promote basketball all year. He's done a great job with that. People care a lot more when we're winning. There's only more potential.
KEVIN WHITEHEAD Varsity sports: Two years of basketball, soccer and baseball On DiStanislao: Tenacity. On Vozenilek: Leadership. On Dalton: Heart. On Martin: Unselfish. On program: It's definitely getting a lot better since I was on JV. They didn't take basketball as seriously as other sports. I feel like we've made a giant step forward. We're definitely competitive in every game.
