The Lower and Middle School athletic programs are coordinated through the Lower School Curriculum and the Middle School Curriculum.

Athletic offerings at the Upper School level include team sports, contract athletics, the weight training and conditioning program and a coeducational outdoor adventure program known as Halsey Watermen. All Upper School students are required to participate in at least one of the four sports programs each season:

  • Team Sports

    These are divided into fall, winter and spring choices. These include:
    • Fall: cross country running, soccer, football, sailing and Halsey Watermen
    • Winter: basketball, indoor soccer, indoor track, wrestling, swimming, and squash.
    • Spring: baseball, golf, lacrosse, tennis and track
  • Contract Athletics

    Contract athletics are available to those students who wish to work on an out-of-season activity or those who are participating in a sport/activity outside of St. Christopher's. Approval for contracts goes through the Athletic Department, and requires two days of strength and conditioning at St. Christopher's.
  • Other Afternoon Options

    Sports Information Team, Ampersand (Theater), Community Service and Publications (Yearbook), Saints Serve RVA.
  • Weight Training and Conditioning Program

    Weight training and conditioning are available to members of an athletic team or by permission of the Director or Assistant Director of Athletics.
  • Halsey Watermen

    This coeducational outdoor adventure program of canoeing and rock climbing is offered to upperclassmen as an alternative to the other formal sports activities.

Facilities

St. Christopher's state-of-the-art athletic facilities include the Kemper Athletic and Fitness Center. The center features a large, modern weight room, enabling students to reap the benefits of strength and aerobic training, as well as a climbing wall available to students of all ages, a wellness library and updated locker facilities for students and visiting teams. The 53,000 square-foot Bolling Field House features one of the area’s few indoor tracks as well as indoor tennis and basketball courts. Other athletic facilities include Scott Gymnasium, Knowles Field (artificial turf), separate Lower School gymnasiums, a new outdoor track and baseball diamond, athletic practice fields, and tennis courts indoors and out, all located on the St. Christopher's campus. An indoor pool is available on St. Catherine’s campus.
