On Friday, September 26, the Saints Varsity Football team traveled to Benedictine for its fourth away game of the season. They kept the score close throughout most of the game, going into the fourth quarter tied at 21-21, but ultimately fell to a formidable Cadets team 35-21.
On offense, the rushing attack struggled outside QB Chase Roberts ‘26, with five different backs taking the ball for a combined 13 carries and 30 yards. Roberts had another 13 carries for 92 yards, including a 70-yard rushing touchdown to put the first points on the board for the Saints. The second touchdown came from FB/DL Lance Clelland ‘27 on a 4-yard run.
Despite Benedictine largely containing the run game, the Saints’ passing offense largely kept them in the game, with Roberts completing 16 passes for a total of 210 yards and a passing touchdown, playing his best game of the season thus far. His leading receivers were WRs JJ Tidwell ‘27 and Andy Hingst ‘26. Tidwell hauled it in 4 times for 122 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown, with another crucial catch that went 34 yards to set up Clelland’s TD. Hingst also had 4 receptions for 48 yards.
Defensively, the Saints were stellar defending the pass, only allowing 7 completions for 89 yards from the opposing quarterback and taking it away twice, with interceptions from DB Collin Johnson ‘26 and LB Elijah Brandon ‘26. However, Benedictine’s run game proved a problem, as the Cadets ran 323 yards as a team.
Following the loss, the Saints advance to 4-1 on the season. Their next game will be a matchup against Fork Union on Friday, October 3 at 6:30 pm, which will be their homecoming game.
