Saints erase 3-goal deficit

Soccer advances to state final.
The varsity soccer team advanced to the VISAA state championship match with an improbable 4-3 victory over Collegiate Thursday, Nov. 6.

The Saints will take on #2 seed Potomac School, a 3-1 winner over Bishop O'Connell, at 6:30 pm Monday, Nov. 10 at City Stadium.

The Saints trailed 3-0 with 57 minutes put to bed, yet the squad ripped off four goals in 21 minutes to shock the Cougars.

Carson Stalker '27 struck a ball that hung around the front of the goal too long for 3-1.

Then Evan Broughton '26 was fouled in the box. The Prep League player of the year had moved himself into more of an attacking role. It paid off.

Lukas Gordinier '26 calmly buried the PK in the 64th minute. 3-2.

Cole Butler '26 delivered a beauty of a pass to Cade Cox '26 10 minutes later, after putting on a dribbling exhibition near the end line, as Cox beat a diving Cougar. 3-3.

Butler was just getting started.

In the 78th minute, StC won a Collegiate goal kick near midfield and found Gordinier, who found Butler, who found another gear and deposited the winner with the left foot to the right corner of the goal for the final margin.

The Cougars gave a valiant last-ditch effort to tie before the final whistle, to no avail, unleashing StC's student section onto Massey Field to celebrate a win shades of the epic state quarterfinal capped by Alexander Levengood's '19 midfield blast, that shocked Cape Henry Collegiate Nov. 7, 2016, another 3-0 chase down.

That final score. 4-3.

That 2016 team finished with a state title. Déjà vu?
