George McVey ’57
2025 Recipient of George C. Howell Jr. ’29 Award
If there were ever a St. Christopher’s alumnus who represented the virtues of the George Howell ’29 Award, it would be George McVey ’57.
During his 36 years as an StC educator, George strengthened the traditions of athletic and academic rigor and increased the prominence of the arts. In retirement, he has remained a steadfast supporter of the School’s alumni community. His ability to connect across generations of Saints mirrors the energy and commitment of George C. Howell Jr. ’29, rallying the alumni body through personal outreach, enthusiasm, and genuine care for StC. As Ross Mackenzie wrote in the May 29, 1997 Richmond Times-Dispatch article, “What better measure of a headmaster than the quality of his graduates and the strength of his school? Few schools can claim they have done better by their graduates than St. Christopher’s has done by the thousands guided through it under George McVey’s steady hand.”
