Wrestling 5th in own invitational

Saints grab valuable experience.

St. Christopher's wrestling team followed up a sixth-place finish at Hopewell with a nice fifth-place performance in this past weekend's St. Christopher's Invitational.

The place winners were led by three second-place finishers: Robert Janis (135), Virginia-bound David Wesley (152) and Trey Tarr (160).

William Kelly (103), Andy Pitts (112) and Ben Thompson (285) earned fourth place in their weight classes.

The younger Saints got to battle older, more experienced wrestlers as well, garnering invaluable repetitions in this high-quality tournament.

"Our kids competed hard in a competitive field," Saints coach John Gordon said. "We lost some close medal-round matches that were winnable. Our goal is to fine tune and win the close ones as the season progresses and the kids mature as wrestlers.

"This tough, early season competition is readying us for the Prep [League] schedule that lies ahead. The atmosphere in the gym on Saturday was great all day – great atmosphere for people who like to compete.

"We were proud to host that event."
