Saints send strong message in renewed rivalry

Michael Turner

Varsity Football shuts out Benedictine 21-0.

St. Christopher’s and Benedictine last played a football game against each other in 2006. Back then, the host Saints were coming off a devastating loss to Norfolk Academy that spoiled a 3-0 start. St. Chris lost to the visiting Cadets 34-27. Following the game, both schools agreed to go their separate ways given the off-field tensions among respective fans.  What a difference a few years makes. This time around, the visiting Saints used the game to improve their record to 3-0, and following this game both teams mingled together in joint prayer.

For St. Christopher’s the victory was complete and impressive on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Saints scored on methodical drives and quick strikes. The first two scoring possessions ate up more than a quarter. The first, lasting most of the first quarter and into the second, totaled 16 plays and went for 92 yards. The Saints’ second scoring drive went 87 yards and took 10 plays, ending with a 2-yard run by sophomore Marshall Hollerith. Rob Vozenilek ran for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 76-yard scramble with 8:40 left to put the game out of reach. Through the air he completed 9 of 18 passed for 128 yards.

Defensively, the Saints applied steady pressure to keep Benedictine in check for the balance of the day. However, the host Cadets', who twice this season have trailed in the fourth quarter and come back to win, got an opportunity with 10:24 left when junior defensive end Nigel Williams recovered a St. Christopher’s fumble at the Saints' 19-yard line. However, the StC defense came up big. On the ensuing 3rd down, Thompson Brown batted, then caught a pass for an impressive interception to end Benedictine's best shot at scoring. Later in the quarter Benedictine threatened again, pushing to the St. Christopher’s 35 yard line. However, the defensive responded again, including a huge sack back senor defensive end Jack Foster. Foster, had eight tackles and sacked Cadets quarterback David Geary three times.

"We're light years ahead of where we were last year," second-year St. Christopher's coach Michael Turner said. "It starts and ends with our defense -- the long drives helped, but our front four was spectacular."
