St. Christopher's football standout is U.Va.-bound

From the Richmond Times- Dispatch

Virginia added another member to its football recruiting class, picking up a Richmond-area defensive lineman. St. Christopher's defensive end/running back Thompson Brown has agreed to be a member of the Cavaliers beginning in 2011. He reportedly received offers from Duke and Maryland. Virginia Tech showed interest, but had not yet offered a scholarship.

Brown missed most of his junior season because of injuries, but made a strong showing at the Under Armour combine in Charlotte this spring, where the 6-4, 220-pound athlete dazzled with his speed, running the 40-yard dash in under 4.6 seconds. Virginia coaches can not comment on recruits until they sign a letter of intent next February, but Brown may represent the last defensive lineman to join with the class. He will join Hermitage's Diamonte Bailey on the unit.

The Cavs also scored big this weekend with Brandon Phelps, the second recruit of the cycle to be rated four stars by the Rivals recruiting service. His father, Gary, also played football for U.Va. A cornerback and wide receiver, Phelps had received a number of Division I offers, a list that reportedly included Virginia Tech.

He becomes the fifth player from Maryland in the 16-member U.Va. recruiting class. Coach Mike London and staff have been making inroads in the state as Terrapins coach Ralph Friedgen finds himself on the hot seat in College Park. -Michael Phillips
