Saints Bring Home Runner-Up Trophy From President's Invitational
Coach Carrier
The distance events propel the Saints to a runner-up finish at the 3rd annual President's Invitational at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA.
Saturday was certainly a different kind of meet for us as we tried to accumulate points, with each boy doing 3 to 4 events during a small 3-4 hour window. With the heat added into the mix, it certainly was a challenge that the boys handled well. I am sure there were some sore legs following that meet. Either way, it was a fun Saturday meet for us with everyone pushing themselves to pitch in for the team.
We had three wins on the day. Our only individual win came from Macon Moring in the 1600. His teammate, Ford Clark, was right behind him as they controlled the race together late, cruising to the easiest 5:23 and 5:24 they have ever run. The other two wins came in the two distance relays. The 4x800 team of Macon, Ford, Stephen Proctor, and Joey Huberman won by over 20 seconds to kick off the running events at the meet. Ford and Macon teamed up with Holden Woodward and Henry Proctor in the distance medley relay for our 3rd win on the day. In fact, we had the only 3 teams entered in the distance medley relay, so that 1-2-3 finish certainly helped our team score.
Stephen, like Ford, grabbed a 2nd place in an individual event on Saturday. This was in the 800 and was quite a battle down the final stretch. Although these were our only two individual runner-ups, we certainly had a lot of 4th place finishes. There were 9 total, with 6 coming in individual events and the other 3 coming in relays. Stanton Dodson tied for 4th in the high jump and Colin Chewning took 4th in the long jump. Anderson Gates took 4th in the 100 hurdles, Holden took 4th in the 400, and Joey had two 4th place finishes in the 1600 and the 800.
Despite all of these events, we still earned 10 different PRs on the day. Some of these were first-time distances for the boys, but the other half were drops in previous best times. The 4x800 alone produced three personal best times. Raleigh Burger led off the B team with over an 8 second drop, while Patrick Mayer anchored the B team with over a 2 second drop. Macon also dropped over 2 seconds on his 3rd leg of the A team. Patrick also dropped about 1.5 seconds in the 400 leg of the sprint medley relay. Colin dropped .3 seconds in the 200 while Stanton (HJ) and Henry Proctor (800) each tied their personal bests in these events.
When all was said and done, we did a great job accumulating 115 points, just 13 points shy of the win. Given that we did not even score in 4 events, that was pretty good. We held off the 3rd place team by 10 points. We were able to leave with several medals and the runner up trophy. And, we certainly looked good in our brand new jerseys. The milkshakes from Sonic were also a welcome treat after being out in the sun all morning and early afternoon!
