During our week of exploration and examination in archaeology camp, we will get our hands dirty identifying objects ranging from 80 to 8,000 years old. After carefully handling actual spear points, we will attempt to manufacture our own stone tools using ancient techniques. From studying soils and excavating, to manufacturing and using ancient weapons, we will learn about the past with our hands and our minds. Like Indiana Jones, along with your Fedora hat and bullwhip, bring your curiosity and good energy as you spend a week training in the techniques and methodologies of an archaeologist.

Instructors will guide soon-to-be drivers through the classroom portion of driver’s education for four days in June. The class will include the Virginia Department of Education certified 11-module driver’s education curriculum. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. The seven required behind-the-wheel sessions can be scheduled after the students complete the classroom course. (Behind-the-wheel scheduling and payment will be coordinated with RVA Driving Academy.)

Because art is so interwoven into the lives of these amazing cultures, we will take note, and weave soulful works ourselves. From the beautiful Massaii people of the Savannah, to the unusual geometric homes and jewelry of the Ndebele, we will come to understand why so many contemporary artists have carried the beauty of this culture into their modern works. From Romare Bearden to Kehinde Wiley we will explore the connections that will live on in our hearts as well. The animals will win us over as we create big cats and long giraffes! Let’s dive in! We will explore all there is to know about our favorite ocean animals! Throughout the week we will create different ocean animals using a variety of mediums! We will investigate the differences between saltwater and fresh water, what seashells do in vinegar, and what ocean waves look like in a bottle! We will create our own edible fish sensory bins as a fun discovery activity and a tasty snack! Lastly, we will create sand and sea sensory bags and build a coral reef using playdoh! A week of discovering much more than “thing-a-ma-bobs” and “whatchamacallits”!

Our Summer Reading Bootcamp offers a fun way for students to spend time with friends, learn strategies for success in advanced English classes, and knock out a summer reading book with guidance by two recently graduated seniors and middle school librarian Ms. Cara Williams. Sessions will consist of periods for individual reading, interactive comprehension-based games, group instruction, and breaks for snacks and physical activity. Students should bring their required summer reading text, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn and have fun with their friends.

Pack your suitcase and get your passport ready for an adventure of a lifetime! For this week-long ‘journey’ to France, campers will get a sampling of what makes France - the country, culture, and language so iconic and known the world over. Each day campers will be exposed to the French language learning basic greetings, numbers, colors, and more. We will go on virtual field trips to major Parisian landmarks and museums. Campers will get to try their hand at artistic and architectural movements, recreating impressionist masterpieces as well as cathedral stained glass. Finally, our pallets will also go on a journey as we sample some of France’s culinary delights in addition to being sous-chefs ourselves. Bon voyage!

Boys and girls will each have their own keyboard during this camp as they learn to read, write, and play music notes and symbols. They will build rhythm and note reading skills, do ear training exercises, as well as receive individual coaching each day. It’s time to have fun exploring the wonderful sounds of the piano! Our Summer Reading Bootcamp offers a fun way for students to spend time with friends, learn strategies for success in advanced English classes, and knock out a summer reading book with guidance by two recently graduated seniors and middle school librarian Ms. Cara Williams. Sessions will consist of periods for individual reading, interactive comprehension-based games, group instruction, and breaks for snacks and physical activity. There will be a focus on the transition from middle to high school, with pointers on marking texts and meeting the expectations of upper school teachers.

During Buggin’ Out Art and Craft Camp we’ll use photos of bugs and insects to inspire our colorful pieces of artwork. We’ll study symmetry, line types and shapes throughout the week together. Each student will complete daily projects in 2D or 3D pieces of mixed media artwork. Campers will also make a light up lantern with pretend bugs and insects.

Let’s breathe, bend, stretch, and find our inner strength! Beginners to yoga as well as yoga enthusiasts are welcome for this week long camp. We will explore the basic principles of yoga, challenging our strength, flexibility, and balance in a fun group environment. In addition, campers will learn and practice mindfulness techniques, tapping into how they are feeling in order to develop important strategies for self regulation. We will also get creative making yoga bracelets and yoga music.

Pack your suitcase and get your passport ready for an adventure of a lifetime! For this week-long ‘journey’ to France, campers will get a sampling of what makes France - the country, culture, and language so iconic and known the world over. Each day campers will be exposed to the French language learning basic greetings, numbers, colors, and more. We will go on virtual field trips to major Parisian landmarks and museums. Campers will get to try their hand at artistic and architectural movements, recreating impressionist masterpieces as well as cathedral stained glass. Finally, our pallets will also go on a journey as we sample some of France’s culinary delights in addition to being sous-chefs ourselves. Bon voyage!

Are you interested in virtual reality? Do you want to learn how to work with video editing software? VR Camp is the perfect way to learn more about virtual reality technology and 360 video recording through hands-on experiments.This camp will allow students to record 360 videos, create immersive environments and experience those environments using Oculus VR headsets. This camp is designed for upper elementary and middle school students from grades 5 through 8. We will begin by experimenting with a few science applications in VR. We will then begin to record POV type videos using 360 video cameras. We will view the edited videos through VR. We hope this camp will capture the love of learning and cultivate the innovative spirit, especially in the areas of VR technology and video editing. Join us!

Instructors will guide soon-to-be drivers through the classroom portion of driver’s education for eight days in August. The class will include the Virginia Department of Education certified 11-module driver’s education curriculum. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. The seven required behind-the-wheel sessions can be scheduled after the students complete the classroom course. (Behind-the-wheel scheduling and payment will be coordinated with RVA Driving Academy.)
