Health & Wellness

Success Starts with a Healthy Body and Mind

St. Christopher's promotes an integrated and holistic approach to the well-being of every boy. Our health and wellness team works to foster academic and personal success in our Saints by attending to their physical and emotional health needs.

Medical Services

We provide medical care to all of our boys on campus, through professional delivery of medical triage, effective communication between the medical team, students and families, and collaboration with academic and athletic programs.

Our medical team consists of two full-time nurses (one in Lower School, one in the Middle/Upper Schools) a part-time nurse for Extended Day, and Director of Health and Wellness, Ann Vanichkachorn, M.D. In addition, we have a full-time athletic trainer on staff.

  • COVID

    COVID MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:
The following summarizes the latest COVID management recommendations from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). While masking is not required on campus, it is recommended in specific situations if your child is infected with or exposed to COVID.

    If your child has symptoms:
    • Symptomatic persons (regardless of vaccination status) should begin isolation at home and undergo testing as recommended by their healthcare provider. The day symptoms began should be counted as Day 0.
If your child tests positive for COVID:
    • Please notify your divisional school nurse. Students or employees who test positive (regardless of vaccination status) should isolate at home for at least 5 days from the start of symptoms or positive test. If they are asymptomatic or symptoms are resolving and they have been fever-free for 24 hours, they may return to school on Day 6, provided:
      • If the individual is able to mask, they should do so through Day 10.
      • If the individual is unable or unwilling to mask during this time, VDH recommends a negative test on or after Day 6 in order to return to school OR the person should remain home through Day 10.
If your child is exposed and remains asymptomatic (regardless of vaccination status):
    • Please notify your divisional nurse. Quarantine is no longer recommended by VDH for individuals who have been exposed. These individuals may continue to attend school as long as they remain asymptomatic.*
    • Exposure is defined as being within six feet of a person who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, or having direct contact with respiratory secretions from an infected person.
    • If you develop symptoms, please undergo COVID testing promptly.
    • Students/staff who attend school during this time may consider wearing a mask around others indoors until Day 10. *If your child is unvaccinated or is vaccinated but did not receive a booster, VDH recommends testing right after the exposure and again between Days 3-5 after exposure (VDH Parent Flowchart)
    Resources:
  • Strep Throat

Symptoms include but are not limited to severe sore throat, fever, congestion, cough and fatigue. If your son has been diagnosed with strep, he may return to school 24 hours after the start of his antibiotic.
  • Influenza (Flu)

Symptoms include high fever, muscle pain, headache, extreme fatigue with or without gastrointestinal symptoms. Please remain at home until fever-free for a minimum of 24 hours without any use of anti-fever medications (Motrin, ibuprofen, Tylenol) to limit the spread of disease on campus. CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months receive the annual flu vaccine. It is not too late to get this year’s vaccine.
  • Gastrointestinal Illness

Symptoms include stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea with or without fever, chills or headaches. Affected students will be sent home and be asked not to return until 24 hours past the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Head Lice

We encourage families to be proactive in checking for lice if the boys exhibit symptoms. If you suspect head lice, please consult your pediatrician regarding whether over the counter or prescription treatments are needed.
