Nick Malloy ’09

Loyal Saints
When Nick Molloy '09 started at St. Christopher’s in ninth grade, he had no way of knowing that he would come to regard the School as his second home.
But when his father got a new job in Arizona right before the start of his senior year, Molloy was devastated at the thought that he might not finish his high school career at St. Christopher’s. In conversations with his mentor, St. Christopher’s Business Manager and Golf Coach A.J. Bolling, Molloy learned of past scenarios where students in similar situations had stayed with teachers during the school year. Soon, he was approached by his track coach and Middle School teacher Gene Bruner ’78, and Molloy decided to move in with Bruner and his wife Julie and their son Will '13, for the entirety of his senior year.

“Mr. Bruner had attended St. Christopher’s, and Julie was a graduate of St. Catherine’s, and they were both incredible mentors to me. I really consider them as my second parents,” Molloy said.

That year, Molloy enjoyed life on campus, where he not only got to know the Bruner family, but also the many other faculty families who lived close to the School. Now an Executive Director of Investment Banking with Morgan Stanley, Molloy often reflects on the lessons of that year in his own work as a mentor for young professionals from UVA and St. Christopher’s who enter the financial sector.

“I wasn’t a lifer at St. Christopher’s, but the School had a unique impact on me. I think about how St. Christopher’s shaped my character, particularly for me, through the athletic program and my year with the Bruners, and I want the School to have the resources to serve future students in even greater ways,” Molloy said.

“When it comes to giving, it’s important to know that every contribution makes an impact, and that giving is a way to continue staying in community.”
