Saints Bounce Back

by Hil Butler '26
On Friday, October 3, the Saints Varsity Football team played their sixth game of the season, defeating Fork Union in a 43-8 blowout victory to advance to 5-1 on the season. This being their first Prep-League matchup, they are now 1-0 in league play.

Offensively, the Saints impressed, racking up 457 total yards and 6 touchdowns. The run game, led by RB Aiden White ‘26, remains efficient, as 3 backs ended the game with over 50 yards on the ground. White accounted for 126 of the total 260 rushing yards, getting the ball 12 times for an average of 10.5 yards per carry. FB/DL Lance Clelland ‘27 and DB/RB Collin Johnson ‘26 also both had 55 and 46 net rushing yards, respectively.

QB Chase Roberts ‘26 played his most efficient game yet, completing 14 of 19 pass attempts for 186 yards through the air and 2 touchdowns, one to Jaerron Johnson ‘27 and another to JJ Tidwell ‘27. Johnson led the team in receptions, racking up 6 for 69 yards, including a 30-yard catch that went into the endzone. Tidwell had 2 receptions of his own, including one that went 55 yards into the endzone on the first offensive snap of the game.

The defense, too, returned to form, bouncing back after the loss to Benedictine. The defensive line was airtight, only allowing FUMA 17 total yards on the ground on 17 rushing attempts. DL Darius Gray ‘26, DL Charlie Edmonds ‘26, DL Drew Pendlebury ‘26, and DE Elijah Asare ‘26 all recorded sacks, with Edmonds leading the team with 2.
The passing defense was just as good, as FUMA only managed 3 completions on 17 attempts and 83 yards. Their only slip-up was on a 72 yard fake-punt touchdown pass, which put points on the board for the Blue Devils for the first and last time of the game.

The Saints recorded four takeaways, one from an interception by Jaerron Johnson and the other three from fumble recoveries. One of those, recovered by DL Jeremiah Stone ‘29, happened in the endzone for a touchdown.

On Friday, October 10, the Saints will have their next league matchup against Woodberry Forrest at home at 6:30 pm. Last year, Woodberry beat the Saints 10-0, but the Saints have shown considerable steps forward since, so both teams will certainly have a fighting chance at Knowles Field.
