Offensive Line and Defense Impress

by Hil Butler '26
On Friday, September 19, the Saints’ Varsity Football team played its fourth game of the season, visiting Norfolk Academy, taking home a low-scoring 17-10 win and advancing to 4-0 on the season.

On offense, the Saints ran the ball well, averaging 6.4 yards per carry as a team and ending the game with 180 net yards on the ground. RB Aiden White ‘27 had the largest share, contributing 97 yards on 12 carries for an impressive 8.1 yards per carry, followed by QB Chase Roberts ‘26, who had 12 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown, which came in the second quarter.

Through the air, Roberts tossed 8 completions on 18 attempts, ending the game with 106 passing yards and a touchdown pass to WR JJ Tidwell ‘27, who led the Saints in receiving yards with 57 on 3 receptions, including a 44-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

The offensive line, led by Darius Gray ‘26 and Walter Cart ‘26, who both also get reps on the defensive line, was exceptional, allowing no sacks and only 3 TFLs.

The Saints’ defense continues to impress, holding Norfolk scoreless through 3 quarters. The running defense in particular was airtight; Norfolk ended with a net loss of ten yards on the ground, averaging -0.4 yards per carry as a team as they struggled against the Saints defensive line, which also got 7 sacks on the opposing quarterback and 13 total TFLs.

Gray led the team in sacks, getting 2 to put him at 7 sacks through just 4 games. Cart and FB/DL Lance Clelland ‘27 also each got 1.5. Clelland and Gray also led the team in TFLs, with Gray causing 4 for a total loss of 11 yards and Clelland causing 3.5 for 19 yards.

Defending the pass, the Saints only allowed 9 completions on 17 attempts and had 3 picks as a team. LB MJ Crocker ‘26, DL Drew Pendlebury ‘26, and DB Austin Robinson ‘27 each recorded 1 interception, and Pendlebury returned his 38 yards.

Coming off the win, the Saints will next play the 4-0 Benedictine Cadets. Benedictine will be tough competition, as they have outscored their first four opponents 166-3.

However, the Saints defense and offensive line will get them a good fighting chance. That game will be played 4 pm on Friday, September 26 at Benedictine, where both teams will hope to stay undefeated.
