Upper School Boys Create Initiative to Help the Community

Nash Steed '21 and Weston Williams '21 discuss SaintsServeRVA, an Upper School community service group.
Great efforts always start off as great ideas. SaintsServeRVA, an Upper School, student-led community service initiative, is a concept that our Saints have made a reality.

Founded this fall by Nash Steed '21 and Weston Williams '21 as part of their work in StC’s Summer Institute on Leadership and Public Service Program, the group participates in weekly community service projects across Richmond.

According to the organizers, over 30 Upper School students are on the growing volunteer email list, and projects typically draw a dozen boys each week. Seeing people join our group is really rewarding,” said Williams. “People at this school want to help the community, and we can provide a way for them to do that.”

Steed, who was inspired by short-term service projects during X-Term his freshman and sophomore years, felt a need for a regular community service program. “It felt weird that it was only one week,” said Steed. “I felt like there needed to be something structured, something happening regularly.”

The group’s first project in late September was to assemble furniture for people without homes for Caritas Furniture Bank, and other projects followed, including cleanups at Forest Hill Park and Evergreen Cemetery.

Steed hopes that SaintsServeRVA has a lasting impact and that the group remains active after he graduates this spring.  “It’s really rewarding, and I really like what we’re accomplishing now. I want it to remain fun and meaningful,” said Steed. “I hope the group is still active in 20 years, long after we’re gone.”
