The odds were stacked against the varsity baseball team in its VISAA State Quarterfinal, 2-1 victory over No. 7 Flint Hill.

No. 9 hitter and No. 9 jersey, Gibson Beck, delivered the coldest hit you'll ever see from a freshman, lining a 2-1 pitch over the second baseman for a single.

Then Virginia Tech commit Willie Hurt marched to the plate, and the senior smacked an RBI double down the right-field line to score Beck, tying the game. 

With momentum in its hand, Wally Jones '25 handed out the coup de grace, a single to centerfield to score Hurt and unleash pandemonium on the light-filled Jacobs Field.

StC would not have been in position to win the game without a gem of an effort from pitcher Christian Gray '26.

He befuddled the Huskies lineup all evening long, pitching 6.2 innings of no hit ball. In all, Gray pitched eight innings and struck out 11 batters, only surrendering one hit.

The Saints advance to the semifinals to face No. 3 seed Paul VI Saturday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights.
