A track and field coach telling a student-athlete that "every point matters" probably goes under the eye-roll category for most youngsters listening to the message.

However, that motto proved true Saturday, May 10 as the outdoor track team won the 2025 Prep League title by one point over Woodberry Forest in Orange, VA.

The Saints had five sixth-place finishes, which was the final scoring place, good for one point. In three of those events, Woodberry finished seventh. Flip one of those events to the Tigers, and the Saints take home silver.

"We've won by one point before, but this was a heck of a day," Saints longtime coach Marshall Ware said. "We projected that we would be second by about 15 points. It was pretty darn exciting the entire time. It was back and forth, back and forth, back and forth."

By the time the final event, the 4x400-meter dash, came around, StC knew if it finished ahead of Woodberry the crown would come back to Richmond. Asher Green '26, Coleman Mayer '27 (4th in 400) and Avi Gupta '25 (6th in 400) were locked and loaded for the relay, but StC needed a replacement, as Noah Smith '27 took a hard fall at the end of the 800 only a few events earlier.

Coaches approached a relaxing Addison Gosline '25, as he had done his damage for the day. Once he heard he could run for the team title, he rose from his respite with enthusiasm. The captain ran a 52-second split in only his third time running the race, as the aforementioned trio all ran under or at 50 seconds to finish in 3:23.70 in second place - ahead of WFS.

It also achieved probably the most improbable school record in recent memory.

"They were pretty pumped," Ware said of the team. "It was a really good atmosphere. The whole team was out on the infield going nuts for everyone on each leg."

The 1600 relay was the second school record to go down on the day, as Gosline contributed to the 4x100 record earlier with Maddox White '26, Elisha Asare '26 and another replacement, George Julias '26 (sixth in long jump). Jayden Brown '25 is the normal member of the team, but Ware wanted him to focus on hurdles for Preps (2nd in 110H, 3rd in 300H) with fellow captain Durham Dodson '25 (3rd in 110H, 4th in 300H).

The throwers were vital in the championship effort as well. Walter Cart '26 took second in shot put and third in discus with two big personal bests. Grayson Herndon '25 and James Segneri '26 scored in the shot and discus as well.

"They had a huge day and were a huge reason we won," said Ware, as Woodberry had a competitor finish seventh in both events, just outside of scoring range. "All three of those guys. They knocked down Woodberry. Very impressive."

Victor Olesen '26 (5th in 110 hurdles) claimed another Prep League title in pole vault, going 17-6. The surprise news out of the event was junior Ryan Scammell's sixth-place finish at 11-6, a foot over his previous best. He finished ahead of a WFS competitor seeded ahead of him going into the meet.

Maddox White '26 won the 200 in .02 over, you guessed it, Woodberry. The Tigers actually took the next three spots, making White's win even more vital.

StC had four other league champs. Green (3rd in 800) won the 1600, LT Nguyen '27 captured the 3200, Henry Rice '25 (sixth in high jump, two spots behind Ford Hunter '25) claimed triple jump, and the 4x800 relay team of Beauford Mathews '25, Gupta, Grayson Jones '28 and Nguyen.

The team will compete for the VISAA state crown Saturday, May 17 at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
