State supremacy

Baseball cashes in on first VISAA state crown.
TIMES-DISPATCH ARTICLE

It's been a long time coming, but it was well worth the wait for coach Tony Szymendera, his staff and an opportunistic group of players.

The varsity baseball team won the state VISAA championship on a rainy Monday night, defeating Prep League rival Trinity Episcopal 8-3.

The Saints put up five runs in the bottom of the second inning, three coming off the bat of Peter Ferramosca '13 on his double. It's not often that your No. 9 hitter makes such plays, but the Saints got contributions like that all season long from various teammates on their way to history.

That bottom second inning included several rain delays and many Saints big plays.

The state champs eventually took an 8-0 lead before TES tacked on three runs in the 7th inning before, fittingly, Ferramosca provided the final putout.

Matt Dunlevy '14 continued his torrid hitting, belting his third triple in as many state tournament games.

Jack English '13 was a man on the mound, going 6 1/3 innings before running out of gas. He got the Saints out of several jams as the Titans looked to make it interesting.

The Saints have made five trips to the state title game in the past 10 years,  earning a much-deserved crown.
