Baseball to state semis

Five-run fifth halts FUMA.
Trailing by a run, the varsity baseball team registered five runs in the fourth inning to stop 8-seed Fork Union Military Academy 8-4 Tuesday afternoon in the state VISAA quarterfinals.

All five runs were scored with two outs, a key head coach Tony Szymendera and his terrific staff emphasize.

Caleb Setliff '15 singled back up the box to tie the game at 4. Then fellow catcher Sam Partee '15 had a two-RBI single for a 6-4 advantage for the top-ranked Saints.

"I knew we needed to drive the guys in," Partee said. "At that moment you just have to breathe, hit it where you can ... He threw me one right up the pipe, and I hit it up the middle.

"But we owe this game to Jeb and Jack. Great pitching."

Jeb Bemiss '16 closed the game out, striking out the side in the seventh. Though FUMA got four runs, English allowed only four hits in the win.

The Saints will play the No. 5 seed Liberty Christian Thursday at 7 pm at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights in the semifinals. LCA topped No. 4 Bishop Ireton 5-2.

The Saints topped LCA 3-2 in an early-season battle at home in March in the only matchup of the year. The other semifinal pitts No. 6 Flint Hill and No. 7 Trinity Episcopal, who both pulled quarterfinal upsets.
