Baseball falls in state semis

Benedictine rallies late.
Times-Dispatch Article

COLONIAL HEIGHTS - Juniors Charlie Yorgen and Porter Reinhart drilled solo home runs in the fifth and sixth inning, respectively, but the Saints were not able to close out Benedictine, falling 3-2 in the state VISAA semifinals at Shepherd Stadium.

A couple of errors and a timely hit from Sam Slough scored two runs to tie the game at two in the bottom of the sixth.

Then Saints pitcher Worth Osgood '12, who controlled Benedictine's potent lineup all evening, was called for a balk, scoring a run from third, which ended up being the game-winner.

The Saints got a leadoff infield single from Matt Dunlevy '14, then Yorgen sacrificed him to second for the inning's first out.

Jansen Fraser then drilled a pitch to deep centerfield as fleet centerfielder Michael Childress ran it down. However, Dunlevy was ruled to have left second base too early as the Cadets got the third out at second and celebrated their second straight trip to the state final.

The Saints had arguably the best defensive performance of the year, highlighted by two terrific defensive plays from Yorgen to stop Benedictine scoring opportunities.

Fraser at third and catcher Caleb Setliff '15 also had standout defensive efforts to put out Cadets, but what mostly will be remembered are the two plays that helped end the contest.

"I think that's a heck of a way to lose a game," said St. Christopher's coach Tony Szymendera to the Times-Dispatch. "I'm so proud of our guys. They're playing the No. 1 team in the state. They have them down. We're making some incredible plays, and our pitcher is pitching his butt off. To have the game essentially come down to a couple of calls like that is disappointing."
