Senior breaks tie with pin in final match of the night.
Surprise?
The varsity wrestling team stopping Liberty Christian was probably a little surprise, based on the youth of the lineup.
But how the Saints did it was a total surprise.
Not much went according to plan in Tuesday's 39-33 victory over the Lynchburg power. For instance, heavyweight Tyler Anthony gained an unexpected pin, but star Robert Janis '13 only got a tech fall at 145.
But that was mild compared to the ending.
The match was tied at 33 when the unheralded Hunter Daniels '12 waltzed onto the red mat centered with a fleur de lis. The six-minute match didn't start well, as Daniels was on his back early.
But all of a sudden, Daniels, with his awkward wrestling style, turned the tables on his opponent and pinned him for six points, a win and a roar from the Saints faithful, ousting the fifth-ranked 170-pounder in the state in Patrick Good.
"He shocked the world," coach John Gordon said. "This was a night that we had been looking forward to for a while. Guys like Tyler Anthony and Hunter Daniels, who have really still worked hard to learn the sport through the year, had their time to shine.
"It's kind of the way you would want to write the script if you wanted an exciting story with an unlikely hero at the end."
