Saints show well at Virginia Duals

Sophomore Ian Saunders has breakout tournament.
HAMPTON - For a school like St. Christopher's to be successful athletically, three-sport standouts are important.

One may have blossomed before coach John Gordon's eyes this past weekend, as sophomore Ian Saunders registered a 2-1 record at the 32nd version of the prestigious Virginia Duals, helping St. Christopher's to a 1-2 record against extreme competition (63-18 loss to Christiansburg, 50-17 loss to Camden Catholic, NJ, 48-27 win over Chantilly).

Individually, Saunders - wrestling at 152 pounds - almost posted a 3-0 record, losing a controversial 3-2 decision against Camden Catholic.

But Saunders posted wins versus No. 6 nationally-ranked Christiansburg and northern Virginia power Chantilly.

Saunders was also a standout JV football player and plays lacrosse in the spring for the Saints.

Other Saints standouts in Hampton who registered 2-1 records were Robert Janis '13 (145), Tyler Cornett '12 (160), Quent Alcorn '12 (195), Marshall Hollerith '13 (220) and Tyler Anthony '14 (285).

Up next for the Saints is a trip to Christiansburg for the Big Blue Tournament, yet another extremely competitive invitational that will test the Saints to the max and also provide a look at chief VISAA state title competitor Liberty Christian.
