FULL STATSTIMES-DISPATCH ARTICLEThe varsity football team had golden field position for most of the game, and converted enough behind a standout defense, to halt rival Collegiate 17-6 Saturday night.
It was the first night game in the 50-year history of the rivalry, and it had a special location: University of Richmond's Robins Stadium.
The Saints got a field goal early from Charlie Williamson '12 after a Jordan Chalkley '12 punt hit a Cougar and was recovered by STC.
After that, the Saints stalled for a while, until Giles Thompson '14 found Landrum Tyson '12 for a 30-yard TD pass.
It was the first play after a bad punt set the Saints up in solid field position, as the Saints took a 10-0 lead into the break.
In the third period, the Saints put together its best drive, a 7-play, 72-yard drive, capped by a 32-yard jaunt from Marshall Hollerith '13.
Collegiate got a TD late from QB Wilton Speight to WR Tyler Kemeny with just over 6 minutes remaining. But the defensive backfield continued to make Speight pay.
Blair Farinholt '12 registered three interceptions, and cornerbacks Cameron Barlow '12 and Garrett Taylor '15 withstood a barrage of deep balls from Speight.
With the win the Saints move to 8-2, its best record under three-year head coach Michael Turner. It is expected to earn the No. 3 seed and visit second-seeded Bishop Ireton Saturday at 1 pm in the state semifinals.
