Saints wrestling takes 6th in Hopewell Invitational

StC posted eight place winners in season-opener.
HOPEWELL, Va. - In its first tournament of the year, the varsity wrestling team boasted eight place winners en route to a sixth-place finish at the much-respected Hopewell Classic December 3-4.

The tournament included 17 teams, boasting two nationally-ranked teams in Frank Cox (Virginia Beach) and Christianburg, both of which won state tourneys last year, Cox at the Group AAA level (Virginia's highest level) and Christianburg at AA.

Virginia commit David Wesley led the way, winning at 152 pounds over defending state Group AAA champion Blake Roulo of Matoaca High. Wesley, a senior, took Roulo down 5-3 in overtime to take the title, and was named outstanding wrestler of the event.

Marshall Hollerith shined at 189, garnering a second-place finish in the sophomore's first varsity competition.

Sophomore Robert Janis (135) and senior Trey Tarr (160) took third in their weight classes, senior Ben Thompson (285) was sixth, and freshman William Kelly (103), junior Andy Pitts (119) and junior Quent Alcorn (171) took seventh.

St. Christopher's wrestled without one of its starters, junior Tyler Cornett, but still put up a respectable performance.

"I am pleased with the finish. The kids competed hard, exhibited good fitness and executed the technique that we have been working on," Saints coach John Gordon said after coaching his first tournament at SC. "The guys wrestled tough against some of the state's best."
