On a rain soaked Wednesday afternoon, the Saints hit the road to take on Norfolk Academy in the opening game of the season. Many of the boys have been waiting for years to play for St. Christopher's, so they weren't going to let the weather dampen their enthusiasm. While the game was shortened due to weather conditions, everyone involved was impressed by the performance the Saints put on for their fans.
Norfolk started with the ball eager to strike first. However, the Saints defense was disciplined in their attack and successfully forced the Bulldogs to punt after just three plays. Knowing that the weather could force a delay in the game at any time, the Saints wasted no time when the offense hit the field. Our 7th Graders scored touchdowns on the first two possessions as they attacked on the ground and in the air. The Saints had two other possessions in which they moved the ball well, but stalled deep in Norfolk territory. There were a few adjustments made during halftime, that the boys were eager to implement...but Mother Nature had other ideas!
While the offense was able to move the ball effectively, the defense was just as impressive. Norfolk Academy was able to tie the game briefly (8-8) on an solid 5 play 70 yard drive of their own. However, the remainder of the first half, the Saints were able to control the Bulldog offense, and force multiple punts. The young Saints showed great passion as they swarmed to the ball, and I was proud to see multiple red jerseys surrounding the Norfolk ball carriers at the end of each play.
It was obvious that the Saints were excited to compete for their team and for their school, and I was proud of the effort and sportsmanship that they displayed throughout the game. While our opening game was a considerable distance out of town, the 7th Grade Saints will be at home for their next game. We will be hosting the Collegiate Cougars on Thursday October 7th at 4:30pm. We hope to see many Saints fans at Knowles Field on Thursday afternoon!
