11 straight state VISAA titles and counting for the grapplers.
This one was too close for comfort.
The varsity wrestling team claimed its 11th straight state title Saturday evening at Hermitage High School, clinching the crown on senior Quent Alcorn's victory at 195 pounds.
Alcorn had no idea before the match that his performance would make history.
"My win ended up sealing the team score. That just makes it that much better," Alcorn said. "Coach [John] Gordon kind of hinted at it. He said, 'If you win this one we'll be all right.' I didn't know until afterwards. Greatest feeling in the world."
The Saints bested Cape Henry Collegiate by three points, 238 to 235. Liberty Christian finished third.
STC boasted three state champions (William Kelly '14 at 106, Robert Janis '13 at 145 and Alcorn), two runner-ups (Tyler Cornett '12 at 160 and Marshall Hollerith '13 at 220) and William Cabell '13 continued his stellar year, grabbing third at 138 pounds.
The difficult schedule prepared the young team to continue the streak. If any year was the year for STC wrestling to take a step back, 2011-12 was it with so many green wrestlers entering the lineup.
But guys like freshman Jacob Hale, senior Andy Pitts, sophomores Ian Saunders, Charles Moore and Tyler Anthony, and senior Hunter Daniels, to name several, more than held their own in positions vacated by talented grapplers like David Wesley, Trey Tarr and steady heavyweight Ben Thompson.
With a boatload of wrestlers returning next season, No. 12 is definitely in the crosshairs in the Prep League and state tournaments.
