Following a day off from school, the 7th Grade Football Team gathered on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Benedictine Middies. Although the damp and dreary conditions were not ideal for their fans, both teams seemed to enjoy the chance to play in the rain. Both squads competed hard, but as the final horn sounded, the Saints had come away with a convincing victory.
The Middies struck first with a quick scoring drive as they showcased a balanced offensive attack. In their opening drive, the Benedictine offensive line was able to control the line of scrimmage and steer their team to the end zone. However, St. Christopher’s answered quickly with a touchdown on their first possession, as the young Saints ran the ball effectively. After productive opening drives for each team, everyone involved settled in for what seemed destined to be a shootout
While both teams were enjoying offensive success, neither defense had stepped forward to seize control of the game. However, over the next two quarters, the Saints defenders were able to gain their footing and were successful in turning back a number of scoring opportunities for the Middies. In particular, the defensive front for St. Christopher’s was able to regain control of the line of scrimmage to turn back the Middies power run game. The Saints were able to cause a few turnovers and force multiple punts to give their offense plenty of opportunities. In their previous game against STAB, the 7th Graders were unable to take advantage of their offensive opportunities. However, against the Middies the Saints were a determined bunch. The offensive line remained aggressive throughout the game as they opened up holes for their playmakers to run through. Once the MUD had settled, the young Saints had impressed their loyal fans with their most convincing performance of the year.
While the 7th Grade Team had struggled on the scoreboard in their last two games, the hard work and determination of this group was never in question. As their coach, I was hopeful that they would see tangible success as a reward for their focus in practice. The boys deserved a solid win against a formidable opponent, and a victory against a talented squad like the Middies was exactly what we needed. Many of the fans in attendance commented that both schools have a deep talent pool that will certainly keep this rivalry competitive for years to come. However, on this particular afternoon, the Saints earned a hard fought and well deserved win. GO SAINTS!
