Hollerith places at prestigious tourney; Saints take fourth in STC Invite
Marshall Hollerith '13 placed in a tough wrestling tourney in Ohio, and an StC team missing three starters managed a fourth-placed finish in the fourth annual St. Christopher's Invitational this past weekend.
Hollerith placed eighth at 220 pounds at the Walsh Ironman Tournament in Ohio, the first StC wrestler to place at what is believed to be the top high-school tournament in the United States - even tougher than National Preps. Joey Prata '16 (106) went 3-2 at Walsh and William Kelly '14 0-2.
Despite missing three stalwarts, StC had 14 of 16 wrestlers place in the top five at the StC Invite. Champions were Robert Janis '13 (152), who returned to action for the first time this season, Ian Saunders '14 (170) and Carrington Lanier '15 (182).
Ryland Ansell '14 wrestled up at 220 and finished second, along with Tyler Anthony at heavyweight. Jacob Hale '15 (126), Mark Gottwald '14 (160) and Charles Moore '14 (195) grabbed third place. Matoaca won the event followed by Franklin County and public-school Group AA New Kent. The Trojans were two points ahead of the Saints.
"Although members of the team headed in two different directions, competing in two different events, it was another good weekend for Saints wrestling," coach John Gordon said.
The entire team will compete at the Richmond Invitational at Hermitage HS Friday and Saturday, December 14-15.
