The Saints of St. Stephen's/St. Agnes used a 77-yard TD pass with the second half just 50 seconds old to top the varsity football team 14-12 Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback Ish Seisay hit Devan Phillips for his only catch of the game on third-and-long as he outraced STC defenders to paydirt for a 14-6 advantage.
The homestanding Saints received two short field goals from Thomas Cottrell '15 to trail by one at the half before the Seisay-Phillips bomb.
STC answered quickly on a four-play, 36-yard drive capped by a 9-yard Ryland Ansell '14 TD catch from Giles Thompson '14. The short drive was set up by a nifty 64-yard kickoff return from Cole Carns '13.
The two-point conversion pass was no good and STC would see no more points. SS/SA intercepted two passes in the second half and a 33-yard Cottrell field goal went wide left. STC was 0 for 9 on third-down conversions for the game.
Jack English '13 (7 tackles, 3 for loss, 2 sacks) and Ricky DeBerry '15 (7.5 tackles, sack) had standout games defensively and hounded Seisay all afternoon, but the quick quarterback made enough plays through the air (222 yards, 2 TDs) to lead SS/SA to 2-0.
STC drops to 1-1 and heads to St. Anne's-Belfield for a 7 pm tilt Friday, September 14. STC beat STAB 3-0 in a rain-soaked game in 2011.
