Good early start and strong defense dictate outcome.
St. Christopher's varsity lacrosse team had one of its best all-around efforts in an 11-5 victory over Middleburg Academy Wednesday evening.
Offensively and defensively, the Saints were strong, getting out to a 6-0 lead early in the third period, shutting out the Dragons for the first 24 minutes of action, a feat that hasn't happened since March.
Though Middleburg is below .500 (7-8), this Northern Virginia team wasn't a push over.
It had losses to the top three teams in the state (Episcopal, St. Stephen's-St. Agnes, Collegiate), so its record based on their schedule is respectable.
So is the convincing win for the Saints, who led 11-3 until the Dragons threw in two garbage-time goals.
"We got a good start to the game," senior captain Rob Vozenilek said. "After that, coming out at halftime we knew that they were a good team. They've competed well with a lot of the better teams in the state. So we knew we had to put them away."
Vozenilek, Henry White '12, Percy Andrews '11 and John Burke '14 scored the second-period goals to put the Saints up 5-0.
Up 6-0, Middleburg dropped in three goals in the third period before the Saints took back control defensively, and got a goal from Ned Valentine '12 to start the fourth period.
The Saints rolled from there to earn their 10th win of the season. They'll visit Norfolk Academy Tuesday, and host Collegiate Friday in a big week in terms of Prep League standings and state tournament placement.
