Tennis wins fourth straight state title

Engel's win at No. 2 keys win.
St. Christopher's defeated Trinity Episcopal 5-2 to win the VISAA state boys tennis tournament Saturday, May 20.

The championship is the fourth in a row for the Saints (15-0). The program has not lost a team match since a 5-4 state semifinal loss in 2018.

"Our team never ceases to amaze me," StC head coach Richard Peyton said. "Each and every one of them come to practice each day with two goals in mind...to push themselves and their teammates to work hard to improve, and to enjoy their time together on the courts. We're fortunate to have a team with such an impressive work ethic."

Senior captains Evan Fisher and Brendon Engel started as 8th graders in the 2019 season for the Saints, and ended their careers without a team blemish and four state crowns. (The 2020 season was not played because of the COVID pandemic.)

Engel was instrumental in keeping that streak alive, besting Trinity's Damian Sancilio 10-5 at No. 2 to give the Saints a 4-2 lead heading into doubles. Blake Caldwell (10-8, #4), Bo Barbour (10-3, #5) and Jake Kuhlen (10-4, #6) accounted for the other singles wins for St. Chris, while Roman Sancilio (10-6) and Gus Mitchell (10-6) claimed wins at No. 1 and 3, respectively, for the Titans (10-4).

Then, Kuhlen and Barbour clinched the match for St. Christopher's with a 10-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
