Sumpter '16 will join Richmond

Offensive lineman also had an offer from James Madison.
The University of Richmond is becoming a popular place for St. Christopher's top student-athletes.

Football offensive lineman Tazle Sumpter '16 committed to the Spiders Friday, a few hours before basketball standout Nick Sherod '16 cast his lot with UR.

Lacrosse star longstick middie Sean Menges '16 committed to the Spiders last summer.

"It's a great school. It's close to the family," Sumpter said. "Coach Rocco and all the staff are excited to have me. It made sense for me. It's a great opportunity for me."

Sumpter has grown to 6-3, 265 pounds and is a terror on both the offensive and defensive lines - he was all-Prep League with 8 tackles for loss - but will most likely play on the offensive side of the ball in college.

He didn't hesitate on his decision, and wanted to decide to focus on his senior season.

"I think it's an absolute great fit for Tazle," Saints football coach Lance Clelland said. "He's had a great summer. He's worked extremely hard to put himself in a position to be offered a full scholarship to the University of Richmond."

Sumpter joins Richmond walk-ons Ganon Hingst '14 and Jacob Roberson '15 with the Spiders, but is the first scholarship football player to join UR from StC since Andrew Bogle '97.

The family will have two active college players as Sumpter's brother James '13 is set to start his junior year at Dickinson in the fall as a linebacker.

Rounding out StC's commits for 2016 is national-level soccer goalie Drew Romig (North Carolina), as the class is off to a roaring start.
