In 2015, former dean of freshmen at Stanford University, Julie Lythcott-Haims, published the parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. She noticed that each year, more and more students arrived on campus with “an impressive list of accomplishments but no sense of independence.”
Dr. Bitsko will use this book as a jumping off point to discuss how we, as parents, can help our children to become strong, resilient adults by allowing them to make their own choices, solve their own problems and even fail every now and then. This is easier said than done, but Dr. Bitsko will provide simple, actionable steps to help us get out of our kids’ way and allow them to develop the skills they need to become healthy adults.
