Saints Defeat Cape Henry In Penalties

by Edison Pellumbi ‘25
In a state quarterfinal matchup, the Saints welcomed Cape Henry Collegiate to Massey Field as they looked to defend their state title. Cape defeated the Saints 3-0 in Virginia Beach earlier this year, so they were expecting a tough test. However, they advanced in a nailbiter, winning 4-3 in penalties after a 1-1 full time score.

In the 18th minute, Charlie Hudson ‘24 opened the scoring, giving the Saints an early lead. This lead would not last long, as Cape Henry equalized soon after. The rest of the match was relatively uneventful, as neither team managed to convert any chances.  After the initial 80, the two sides lined up for two 5-minute extra periods.  The Saints dominated the possession and came close to creating some big chances, but nothing truly materialized, bringing the match to penalties.

Ben Smith '25 saved the first shot from Cape, and Jack Bleecher '25 stepped up and nailed the response.  Both shooters converted on the second set, with Jackson Carlyon '24 shooting for the Saints.  Smith saved the third penalty, and Campbell Stalker '26 nailed his, putting the Saints on the brink of victory.  Smith couldn't come up with a save on the fourth, and the Saints' penalty was sent wide, giving Cape Henry hope.  They converted their penalty, leaving it up to Steven Bishara '25.  He cooly nailed the penalty, advancing the Saints to the semi-finals.

The Saints will take on Potomac School at City Stadium on Wednesday, November 8 as they look to advance to a second consecutive VISAA Final.
