Spartans Squeak Past Saints for Invite Title

by Austin Levin '23
A well contested 3-point attempt at the buzzer for senior Thomas Youngkin went in and out as Steward held on for a 55-52 victory and the Freeman Basketball Invitational championship.

Curtis Blair III of Steward School scored 34 out of Steward's 55 points and allowed the Spartans to emerge victorious over the Saints led by Youngkin with 14 points, Brandon Jennings '24 (14 points, 7 boards), and Darius Gray '26 (11 points, 13 rebounds).

The 3-point shots simply were not falling for the Saints, as they shot 3 of 19 from behind the arc while the Spartans went 8 of 17 from deep, in large part to Blair, who went 5 of 8.

The Saints earned an impressive 2nd place finish in the Douglas Freeman Invitational with victories over the Cadets of Benedictine and hosts of the tournament themselves, the Douglas Freeman Mavericks. However, the Saints will get to face Steward School in Scott Gymnasium on December 19th, where they look for revenge, but their next outing will be against Carmel School on the road at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, December 7th.
