Illustrating the History of World War II

Middle Schoolers create individual World War II timelines.

World War II ended 75 years ago, but it shaped the world we live in. This week, seventh grade history students created illustrated timelines that highlight major events of the global conflict.

Students appreciated the chance to focus on what they find to be important as well as the opportunity for self-expression. “You get to choose what’s interesting,” said Winston Morris '25. “It’s a fun way to learn, and you can use your imagination.”

Students included events such as the Battle of Stalingrad, the development of the atomic bomb, Pearl Harbor and the rise of the United States as a global power.

“As they’re putting the events down, they really can see the chronology of the war. It gives them that visual record,” said Middle School History Teacher Hill Brown.

Brown believes that allowing students to use drawing and art to learn is not only fun, but it’s also effective. “I feel like it’s a great alternative to a lot of the digital stuff that we do. Drawing it out just puts it in their head.”
