StC Boys Learn Safe Online Habits

Cybersecurity expert Katie Greer Visits Campus.
It’s never too early to learn about good online habits. This morning, a group of Middle School boys was visited by Katie Greer, an expert in cybersecurity. Greer specializes in instructing everyone from schoolchildren to CEOs on safe ways to use the internet.

Greer spoke to a group of sixth-graders in Memorial Chapel about using technology and taking advantage of new innovations, but in a way that’s healthy and appropriate. Greer believes children can embrace new online tools while also reducing the risk of harm.

“This stuff isn’t going away, so it would be really counterproductive to say, ‘Put this away, don’t use it,’” said Greer. “How can we be part of the solution? How can we use this is in a better way? How can we help the future generations of coders or use technology to reduce cyberbullying?”

She believes using age-appropriate settings, privacy controls and establishing clear guidelines around the use of apps and other resources makes children (and adults) safer from being targeted or bullied.

Greer will also be speaking with fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade parents tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Lower School Auditorium.
