Royal '19 picks UCLA

Houston, North Carolina, Oregon and Southern California were also considered.
UCLA is the choice for track and field standout Frank Royal '19.

Royal picked the Bruins over Houston, North Carolina, Oregon and Southern California, after a whirlwind of visits this past fall.

The captain is one of the top high-school long jumpers in the U.S., having jumped 24-4 1/2 as a junior last season, a school record, and the top American performance at Penn Relays in 2018 that was just a 1/4-inch shorter.

"UCLA was my school of choice because I felt the most comfortable there and I saw the mission that they had," said Royal, mentioning the Bruins would like to win a national title in the near future. "I would like to be a part of that team to win the national championship."

Royal will lead the Saints in the winter and spring with fellow captain Elby Omohundro '19, a UVA commit.

"I'm very excited for both guys," Saints track coach Marshall Ware said. "Nobody works harder and deserves it more. I can't wait to follow them at the next level."
