Sixth graders write autobiographies in Global Thinking class

Ben Smith '25, a student in Mr. Porter's Global Thinking class, discusses the process of writing his autobiography.
Sixth grade students in Mr. Porter's and Mr. Piper's Global Thinking classes have been hard at work composing autobiographies. Boys have devoted several class periods over the past week to writing about their earliest memories, greatest accomplishments, and life goals.

Ben Smith, a student in the class, explains the importance of the activity—one that might not on the surface seem like the most logical place to begin in a global thinking class. Ben says,"before {we} attempt to understand the world and put ourselves in someone else's shoes, you have to be able to put yourself in your own shoes and actually understand....because if I don't understand myself, I'm not going to be able to understand someone else."

Global Thinking is designed for sixth grade boys to become more aware of the world in which they live and provide opportunities to engage with contemporary issues as responsible global citizens. As the boys have done with the autobiography assignment, throughout the year they employ multi-media resources to explore current events and international trends. The boys cultivate habits of independent learning through regular assignments, purpose-driven reading, written work, and public speaking.
