Wrestling ousts BCP at Rumble on the River

StC posts four pins.
In an early season matchup of the two top prep wrestling teams in Virginia at the annual 'Rumble on the River', the Saints scored a decisive victory over archrival Benedictine, despite having to sit no fewer than three potential starters.

The dual started at 182, where the Saints had to take a forfeit due to injuries to Jeffrey Moore and William Tappen.

Carter Davis bumped up to 195 and scored a first period pin to tie the score at six apiece.

At 220 and 285, Jens Ames and Ralph Levy, still shaking off the rust from football season, displayed their scrambling abilities to score successive third period pins and put the Saints up 18-6.

The next match, moving back down to 106, featured two highly-touted freshmen. Saint Erik Roggie controlled the match against Brendan Barnes for a 6-2 win.

Freshman Jake Keeling, in his first varsity match as a Saint, stepped up and came through with a pin at 113.  Moving up to 120 pounds, freshman Kevin Schork proceeded to control the action and pick up a gritty win, putting the Saints up 30-6.

After two wins by Benedictine at 126 and 132, Gray Hart scored a major decision at 138 to push the Saints lead to 34-13, one win away from clinching the dual.

Seth Wagner then sealed the victory at 145 pounds with three bouts left in the dual.

After two Benedictine pins, Loudon Hurt finished the scoring for the Saints with a solid decision despite wrestling up two weight classes at 170.

In the ensuing weeks, the Saints will be integrating a number of talented wrestlers into the lineup, and will be able to field a team that will compete for titles at the Prep Slam in Atlanta, the VISAA State Tournament and National Preps. We invite you to stay tuned to what shapes up to be an historic season for Saints wrestling!
