Prep League meet performance is usually a good indication of how the state VISAA meet will proceed.

For the varsity indoor track team, that was great news as the boys pulled off the double, winning the state meet a week after hoisting the Prep League trophy.

The margin was much closer this time, as StC downed second-place Fork Union by 10 points. The meet was clinched when Wyatt Campbell '19 won the 3200 in just over 10 minutes. He expected to win his race, but winning the whole state meet was another story.

"We seemed like we had taken quite a hit after last year," Campbell said, noting the departures of strong seniors like Brandon Thomas '16 (Virginia Tech), Sean Menges '16 (Richmond, lacrosse) and Joey Cuevas '16. "But I guess every other team did as well."

What the Saints did well was come up with points from unexpected places. For example, Prep League high jump champ Christian Sherod '18 didn't score in the same event in the state meet, but ripped off a career-best 42-0 triple jump to place fifth and earn valuable team points.

"I think we knew it was going to come down to be really tight," coach Marshall Ware said. "This team has never failed to exceed expectations and go above and beyond."

The Saints didn't wow with a lot of gold medals, but scored in all 15 events.

Harrison Rice '18 (15-6) and Allan Pedin '17 (14-6) went 1-2 in the pole vault for big points. Rice set the meet record.

Frank Royal '19 placed second in the long jump (22-9 1/2). Jacob Vath '17 and Henry Schroeder '18 were 3-4 in the shot put.

Elby Omohundro '19 scored in a myriad of events, as usual. StC was second, fifth and seventh in the relays with the 4x800 (Ian Smith '20, Whit Sprinkle '17, Hank Valentine '20, Kannon Noble '17) going 8:33.79 for silver.

Though some of the most talented Saints have departed, the depth of this group won the first indoor track title the school has held since 2009.
