The swimming and diving team had been the bridesmaid or the groomsmen enough.

Coming second in the state had became almost routine the past few years, but not in 2017. The Saints traveled the Christianburg and got the job done, knocking off co-Prep League champion Trinity Episcopal and the rest of the field for the state VISAA title.

It is the school's first swimming and diving state crown since 2005.

Leading the way was Sean Hogan '19, who earned Swimmer of the Meet. He won the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.54) and 100 backstroke (49.61) with All-American times.

He also was a part of two winning relay teams (4x100 freestyle and 4x50 medley) helping tally 40 important points for the Saints.

Other outstanding contributions included the 200-yard freestyle relay, Drake Wielar in the 100 breaststroke, Townes West (100 fly) and Gray Broaddus '20 (diving). Each finished third in their event.

The 200 free relay team of Drake Wielar, Thomas Branch, Townes West, and Gareth Mancini broke the 200 free relay record with a time of 1:26.65.

St. Catherine's also won the girls crown, ironically by the same margin in team scores. This is the first time in 20 years that St. Catherine's and St. Christopher's won the state title in the same season.
