Saints earn eighth straight win; Ende, Vaeth score late
Logan Ende '15 and Ben Vaeth '16 scored late in the second half as the varsity soccer team advance to the VISAA state final, beating top-seed St. Stephen's-St. Agnes 2-1 Wednesday at Sports Backers Stadium.
It was the eighth consecutive victory for the Saints, who will face Norfolk Academy Friday at 7:30 pm back at Sports Backers for state supremacy. The Bulldogs, the No. 3 seed, beat Paul VI 3-2 in OT Wednesday.
STC's last loss was way back on Oct. 11, a 1-0 loss to Norfolk as the Bulldogs snuck a goal in in the final minute. That's a distant memory as the boys have gone nearly a month without a defeat.
Wednesday, SS/SA scored first in the 51st minute from the foot of Andrew Arnold. Undeterred, STC continued to limit SS/SA's offensive opportunities as Ende broke loose for a goal off a corner from Will Abbott '13.
Two minutes later, in the final minute, Vaeth broke SS/SA's back off a cross from Porter Reinhart '13 to give STC a state final bid for the first time since 2005 when the Saints beat Eastern Mennonite 4-2. That team went unbeaten led by Max Hare and Austin Wates.
STC split their two earlier final appearances, winning in 1999 (Christchurch) and falling in 2000 (Collegiate).
