LYNCHBURG - St. Christopher's turned the ball over seven times as Liberty Christian Academy took advantage to the tune of a 50-8 victory in the VISAA Division I state title game Friday night at Liberty University's Williams Stadium.
LCA struck early on a 4-yard fumble return from Mike Dunn at 7:45 of the first period. The fourth-down snap went between kicker Charlie Williamson's legs. Williamson gathered it and was hit and fumbleD and Dunn took over from there.
LCA continued to put up big plays as Carrington Mosley caught a 60-yard TD, Jon Brado ran a 16-yard reverse in for 6 and Tyler Meeks hauled in a 49-yard TD pass from Matt Lewis, all in the first half that ended with LCA ahead 34-0.
It was a historic season for St. Christopher's, equaling the school's best win mark at nine and setting the table for successful seasons to come.
Many seniors played their last games for the Saints and played hard throughout.
But turnovers and uncharacteristic mistakes blew up STC's opportunity at the top hardware, its first try in a state title game since the 2003 loss to Collegiate.
