ALEXANDRIA - The varsity football team put its faithful through another heart-pumping, suspenseful game, outlasting homestanding Episcopal 13-12 Saturday afternoon at the Hummel Bowl.
Down 12-0 at the half, the Saints put together two 13-play, 80-yard drives.
The first ended in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Giles Thompson '14 to Harrison McVey '13. Charlie Williamson's extra-point was true, 12-7 Maroon with 1:36 left in the third period.
Bobby Myers of Episcopal missed a 44-yard field goal on fourth-and-two the previous possession, then had a 28-yarder hit the right upright on the next possession for the Maroon.
The Saints then took 6:28 to trek down the field, as Thompson found Tucker Brown '12 for a 5-yard TD pass. Miles Jackson '12 was a beast on the drive, running through holes created by the offensive line getting 35 yards on four carries. One went for 20 yards on fourth-and-1.
He finished with 78 yards on 13 carries.
Ganon Hingst '14 was stopped for the two-point conversion; 13-12 Saints with 1:03 left.
Maroon QB Austin de Butts drove his team down to the 50-yard line, and hit Jonathan Pryor for 16 yards on fourth-and-15 to keep Episcopal's heart beating.
Later, he scrambled for eight yards to set up a 34-yard field goal from Myers with 7 seconds left.
But the snap was botched by the home team and time ran out, giving the Saints a 7-1 record heading into a big matchup at Woodberry Forest Saturday at 2 p.m.
Kudos to Stephen Lestyan, who blocked the extra-point after de Butts hit Johnny Bond for a 38-yard TD pass on Episcopal's first drive of the contest. It effectively won the game.
