J.T. Beck '13 wasn't even supposed to be on the field.

A 5-11, 155-pound reserve defensive back, Beck replaced a cramping Landrum Tyson '12 in FUMA's last drive. The Blue Devils were smart, and went right after Beck on a deep ball. Incomplete.

The Blue Devils eventually got in field goal range, but with 11 seconds left in the contest, Beck blocked Jordan Roach's attempt to give St. Christopher's a 28-27 bounce-back victory over homestanding FUMA.

The game was pretty much all Saints in the first half. St. Chris led 13-6 at the half on two Charlie Williamson '12 field goals (24, 33) and a 28-yard catch and run by Blair Farinholt '12 from Giles Thompson '14.

Only a ridiculous 85-yard punt return from senior D.J. Randle El (yes, Antwaan Randle El's son) gave the Blue Devils any life.

Then backed up at its own 3-yard line in the third period, offensive coordinator Chuck Robinson made a beautiful call as Thompson stepped back and hit a wide open Cole Carns '13 on a streak route. 97 yards later it was 20-6 StC with 7:14 left in the third period.

But we've seen this movie before. Benedictine staged a comeback a week earlier, and so did FUMA.

The Blue Devils scored three touchdowns within 3:36, taking a 25-20 lead at the 8:19 mark of the final period.

However, the Saints responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Ganon Hingst '14 5-yard bolt. His two-point conversion made it 28-25.

StC got a stop, but a Roach punt backed up the Saints. Coach Michael Turner allowed Thompson to give FUMA a safety with 1:48 left to set up Beck's heroics.

Up next is John Paul the Great in the Saints last home game at Knowles Field for the 2011 season, Saturday, October 15 at 3 p.m. on Fall Festival.
