Mistakes at the most inopportune times cost the varsity football team a 48-45, four-overtime thriller against Benedictine Saturday afternoon.

Up 21-7 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Benedictine recovered a Saints fumble at the Saints 5-yard line and Corey Downey (31 carries, 103 yards, 3 TDs) punched it in one play later to cut the deficit in half.

The Saints stalled on their next drive and punted. Benedictine's drive started off promising as a Cadets penalty and a sack from Quent Alcorn '12 backed Benedictine up to its own 4-yard line.

But QB David Geary '12 hoisted two bombs to Charley Meyer (211 offensive yards, 2 TDs), one for 48 yards and another for 47, to set up another 1-yard plunge from Downey with 45 seconds remaining. Geary's extra-point sent the game into overtime.

The teams traded TDs and extra points three times before a few bad shotgun snaps forced the Saints to get a 25-yard field goal from Charlie Williamson '12.

The Cadets (4-1) struck on the next play throwing a fade to Meyer for the decisive score as the No. 5 team in the VISAA topped the No. 2 team.

The Saints won the turnover battle 4-1, and outplayed the Cadets for most of the game.

Senior Blair Farinholt's incredible catch-and-run for a 21-yard score put the Saints ahead 14-7.

Both teams went scoreless in the third period before Miles Jackson '12 got loose for a 22-yard bolt, set up by Farinholt's 58-yard catch up the seam from Giles Thompson '14 (16 for 32, 165 yards, 4 TDs).

It led to one of the most impressive but heart-breaking finishes in Saints football history.

StC (4-1) will visit Fork Union Friday at 2 p.m. looking to get back in the win column.
