StC opens season with shutout

The varsity football team shutout Trinity Episcopal 33-0 in the season-opener for both teams.

Shining in his first varsity contest in any sport was freshman Garrett Taylor. The cornerback went from a varsity hopeful to a starter, and proved why taking back two fumbles for touchdowns.

The first was a 41-yard return off of a forced fumble by Jack English '13 (five tackles, all for loss, and a sack) for a 21-0 second quarter lead.

Then in the third period, Marshall Hollerith '13 laid the boom on Trinity's Torey Burston, who fumbled right to Taylor. He raced 29 yards to paydirt for the final score of the contest.

Quarterback Giles Thompson '14 (7 for 16, 112 yards, INT) had a nice debut, as did running back Ganon Hingst '14 (84 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 37 receiving yards) as the Saints will face St. Stephen's-St. Agnes Saturday at 1 p.m. looking to go 2-0.

The junior-varsity team also got to play in the varsity game as Ned Farley '14 (team-leading 6.5 tackles) and Ricky DeBerry '15 (1.5 sacks, fumble recovery) were a few that played well.

The JV game against Trinity was canceled, and coach Michael Turner was delighted to award the youngsters with their wonderful effort this preseason. JV will host SSSA Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
