Well, it wasn't the way the varsity soccer team wanted to reach the state VISAA semifinals, but boy was it exciting.
The Saints trailed 3-0 late in the first half and mounted an epic comeback to down Cape Henry Collegiate 4-3 in the quarterfinals Monday.
The Dolphins put up three early goals to get a sizeable lead in the first half.
Shortly before halftime, the Saints were able to answer on a corner kick by Ben Cooper '19 that went in off the head of captain Garrett Levy '17. The Saints' second goal came early in the second half off the foot of Cooper, who was assisted by Trent Levy '17.
Graham Mauck '17 then tied the game at 3 with a goal in the 59th minute on sheer hustle and determination. It set up a ridiculous midfield offering from Alexander Levengood '19. It glided just over the outstretched hand of Cape's keeper, who was out just a bit too far from his post in the 78th minute.
"I just saw the keeper was way off his line," Levengood said. "There wasn't much time left, so why not. As soon as I hit it I knew."
We know No. 1 StC will face fourth-seed Paul VI at SportsBackers Stadium at 7:30 pm. No. 10 Potomac and No. 3 Bishop Ireton will face off at 5:30 in the other half of the bracket.
