Woodberry proves too much for Saints on Senior Day
by Shelton Moss '17
The Woodberry Forest Tigers rode a dominant first-half performance en route to a 48–6 victory over the varsity football team on Saturday afternoon at Knowles Field.
The game got off to a rough start for St. Chris (5–3, 1–2 Prep), giving up three touchdowns in the first quarter. But the home team got on the board early in the second, as quarterback John Damgard '17 connected with fellow senior Hayden Mitchell on an innocent-looking slant pass that went for 88 yards and a score. It was Damgard's 24th touchdown pass on the season, and Mitchell's 12th such reception.
However, the story of the game was the Tiger (7–1, 3–0 Prep) defense, which stymied the Saints attack and did not allow a score the rest of the game. The loss also snapped the Saints' five-game winning streak, their longest since 2004.
One bright spot was linebacker Charlie Boggs '19, who was tied for a game-high with six tackles, including one for loss. D.T. Badley '17 also had a tackle for loss and recorded a sack.
The Saints will regroup as they prepare for a highly-anticipated matchup on the road against archrival Collegiate this Saturday in the regular-season finale. The contest could very well have postseason implications, as both teams are fighting for a state tournament berth.
